Nike Snowboarding
Art director Jason Sturgill called me one afternoon to see if I could come out to the Nike campus to meet with him and Nike Snowboarding creative director Michael Hernandez.
I left the meeting with a shoebox full of 72 tiny unfinished wooden nesting dolls and an assignment — hand paint all of them so that they could be used as custom vessels for invitations sent to Nike’s specialty snowboard retailers to attend a private party in Vegas.
I painted 72 little dead astronauts for the occasion, and upon delivery was told they would be asking me to do several more special art pieces over the coming year.
What we ended up making together was a really fun body of work: a large set of hand painted nesting dolls featuring portraits of the entire Nike Snowboarding team — reproduced in a limited run to send to select snowboarding retailers, a screenprinted poster for an event in Colorado with Diplo perfoming, a custom painted pair of Nike Zoom Force 1 snowboarding boots, and a Nike Snowboarding shirt design for the X-Games.
